The massive Willard InterContinental sits at the heart of everything that is Washington D.C.; the Capitol and all the most recognizable national monuments are within a short walking distance. Guests profusely proclaim and say The Willard InterContinental’s inside is just as impressive as its well maintained and beautiful surroundings, particularly the massive marble columns and intricate chandeliers that are located in the lobby.
Steven Spielberg shot the ending of his smash hit film “Minority Report” at the hotel back in the summer of 2001. It was filmed with Tom Cruise and Max von Sydow in the Willard Room, Peacock Alley and the kitchen of the property. Albeit a replica of the terraced roof of the office building was constructed on a soundstage for the final scene. On February 22, 2012, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd gave a dramatic resignation speech in the hotel’s Douglas Room. Few know that the hotel itself was almost allowed to vanish from existence. After the Willard family sold off the hotel it quickly fell until disrepair until it was rescued by the folks at IHG. The Willard was subsequently restored to it’s elegance of the early 1900s and an office-building addition was added. The hotel was thus re-opened in a lavish grand opening amid great celebration on August 20, 1986, which was attended by several U.S. Supreme Court justices and Senators of the USA. In the late 1990s, the hotel once again underwent significant restoration.
